The Digital SAT format: sections, modules, timing and scoring

How the Digital SAT is structured today: two sections, four modules, 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes, module-adaptive routing and the 400–1600 scale.

Checked against official sources on 22 September 2026.

The SAT is taken on a laptop or tablet in College Board's Bluebook app. It has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, and each section is split into two modules of equal length.

SectionQuestionsTime
Reading and Writing5464 minutes (two 32-minute modules)
Math4470 minutes (two 35-minute modules)

In total that is 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes.

How the modules adapt

Module-adaptive: each section has two modules, and how you do in the first module decides whether the second is more or less difficult. The adaptation happens once per section, between the two modules, not question by question. Within a module you can move back and forth, mark questions for review and change answers.

The practical consequence is that Module 1 matters more than it feels: a strong first module unlocks the harder second module, which is where the highest scores come from.

Question types and tools

  • Most questions are multiple choice; some Math questions ask you to enter your own answer.
  • A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the Bluebook testing app for both Math modules; an approved handheld calculator is also allowed.
  • Reading and Writing questions each have a short passage or a pair of passages and one question.

Scoring

Total score 400–1600, made up of two section scores of 200–800.

Our SAT practice tests use the same two-module structure and timing, with Desmos, the reference sheet and mark for review.
